Surprises make us laugh, and surprises are what one wants to deliver.

To some degree it really is like learning history.

When you first read history, it’s just a whirl of names and dates. Nothing seems to stick. Nevertheless the more you learn, the greater hooks you have for new facts to stick onto– which means you accumulate knowledge at what exactly is colloquially called an exponential rate. When you remember that Normans conquered England in 1066, it’s going to catch your attention whenever you hear that other Normans conquered southern Italy at about the same time. Which will make you wonder about Normandy, and be aware when a book that is third that Normans are not, like the majority of of what exactly is now called France, tribes that flowed in as the Roman empire collapsed, but Vikings (norman = north man) who arrived four centuries later in 911. Rendering it better to remember that Dublin has also been established by Vikings when you look at the 840s. Etc, etc squared.

Collecting surprises is a similar process.

The greater amount of anomalies you’ve seen, the more easily you will notice ones that are new. Which means that, strangely enough, that while you get older, life should are more and more surprising. When I was a kid, I used to think adults had it all figured out. I had it backwards. Kids are those who have it all figured out. They may be just mistaken.

When it comes to surprises, the rich get richer. But (just like wealth) there may be habits of mind that will assist the procedure along. It’s good to own a habit of asking questions, especially questions beginning with Why. Read the rest of this entry »
